A | 신뢰 잃은 경찰 브리핑도 "못 미덥다"폭염 속 시신 부패에도 주민들 못 알아채 [앵커]경찰은 장미란 씨 사인과 관련해 타살 등 범죄 가능성을 이렇게 낮게 보고 있지만 인근 주민들은 '야자수 숲'이라는 특성 때문에 경찰 브리핑에 의문을 제기하고 있습니다. 전문가들 사이에서도 타살 가능성을 배제하면 안 된다는 목소리가 나오고 있습니다. 경찰이 시신 상태 등 여러 객관적인 증거를 토대로 말하고 있지만 애초에 스스로 신뢰를 잃은터라 사인을 둘러싼 논란을 자초한 셈입니다.정영재 기자입니다.[기자]장미란씨는 지난 5월 12일 밤 집을 나섰습니다.그리고 104일 만에 400미터쯤 떨어진 야자수 숲에서 백골 상태 시신으로 발견됐습니다.4미터 정도 되는 야자수가 빽빽이 심겨있어 한낮인데도 이 안쪽은 어둡고 보이지 않습니다.이 앞은 바로 도로인데 맞은 편에 비닐하우스가 있어 주민들이 자주 드나드는 곳입니다.하지만 야자수 특성상 뾰족하고 단단한 가시 같은 부분이 많아 일반인이 접근하는 건 쉽지 않습니다.더군다나 어두운 밤 슬리퍼 차림으로 들어갔다간 찔리는 고통을 참기 어려웠을 거라는 겁니다.이때문인지 인근 주민들은 장씨 죽음을 두고 의문을 제기하고 있습니다.[주민 : 목맸다고는 하는데, 목맬만한 곳이 없는디. 치고받고 싸운 것도 아니고…]장씨 남자친구 역시 JTBC 취재진에 "실종 당일까지도 스스로 목숨을 끊을 만한 힘든 일은 없었다"고 말했습니다.유서도 아직 나온 게 없습니다.폭염에 폭우까지 시신이 빠르게 부패할 수밖에 없는 환경이었지만 바로 옆에 사는 주민조차 전혀 알아차리지 못한 것도 의문입니다.[주민 : 5월 중순부터 아침에 5시에 나가면 이 앞에서 10시까지 오이 수확하면서 네 사람이 계속 작업하고 전혀 낌새 전혀 못 챘고…]경찰은 장씨 시신을 발견한 초기부터 자살에 무게를 두고 관련 브리핑까지 했지만, 애초에 실종사건을 허위 종결하고 이후 대응도 부실하면서 사인을 둘러싼 논란을 자초했단 지적입니다.이런 여론을 의식해서인지 경찰은 '타살 위장' 등 모든 가능성을 열어놓고 정확한 사인을 밝히겠단 계획입니다.[영상취재 문석빈 정철원 영상편집 이지혜]。
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez spent months struggling to get the campaign donations, attention and support he needed to keep his long-shot quest for the Republican presidential nomination alive.
That ended Tuesday, when Suarez announced he would be suspending his campaign, making him the first Republican to drop out of a nomination contest that is both crowded and heavily favoring former President Donald Trump.
“While I have decided to suspend my campaign for President, my commitment to making this a better nation for every American remains," Suarez said in a statement.
“I look forward to keeping in touch with the other Republican presidential candidates and doing what I can to make sure our party puts forward a strong nominee who can inspire and unify the country, renew Americans’ trust in our institutions and in each other, and win.”
Suarez did not offer his endorsement to any of the remaining candidates.
Suarez failed to make the debate stage in Milwaukee, despite having reached, he claimed, the threshold for 40,000 individual donors. In his quest to get more donations, Suarez offered people a chance to get front-row seats to see legendary Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi in his first game playing for Inter Miami.
But with dismal polling numbers – the last three major surveys had Suarez with zero support of GOP primary voters – Suarez did not qualify for the debate stage. While campaigning in New Hampshire weeks ago, Suarez said that candidates who did not meet the thresholds for the Milwaukee debate should drop out.
As the only Hispanic in the GOP presidential race, Suarez – the 45-year-old son of Miami's first Cuban-born mayor – at first appeared to be someone who could build on the party's inroads among Latino voters. Exit polls show that Hispanics – especially in Republican Florida – are moving more toward the GOP, although Democrats still hold a commanding lead among the voter group nationally and in battleground states like Arizona and Colorado.
Suarez was also an early proponent of vaccinations for COVID-19. He has clashed with his state's GOP governor, Ron DeSantis, criticizing his foe for the GOP presidential nomination for the expansion of the "don’t say gay" law in schools and the handling of the slavery curriculum in classrooms.
Nor has Suarez been a reliable enemy of President Joe Biden. At an event at the White House in early 2021, Suarez said he spoke with the president about the pandemic and climate change, adding that he had more communication with the Democratic president than with Trump, when he was president.
"I've spoken to the president and vice president more times in the short period that they have been in office than I had spoken to the prior administration entirely," Suarez said at the time. "To me, that's an intentional desire on their part to really plug in with the mayors."
In the months he has been campaigning, however, Suarez – who did not support Trump in 2016 or 2020 – has shied away from criticizing the GOP's front-runner. In June, Suarez hinted he would pardon Trump, saying the tool is useful for presidents to “heal the country.”
